Wired connections for Xbox, PS5, PCs and TVs

A neat cable from the router to the devices that benefit most, for steadier gaming, streaming and work.

Wi-Fi’s handy, but if a device never moves, a cable’s better. Your console, gaming PC or TV doesn’t need to compete with every phone in the house. Give it a cable and it gets a steady path to the router all of its own.

What you’ll notice

If you’re a gamer, it won’t be the headline speed you notice. It’ll be the latency, meaning how long data takes to get there and back, and how much that time jumps around. Wi-Fi can be quick most of the time, then spike when someone starts a video call. A cable takes that out of your home network.

A wired TV is less likely to stop and buffer or drop to a lower picture quality. On a home office PC, video calls are steadier and big files move faster. Everyone else benefits too, as each device you take off the Wi-Fi leaves more room for the ones that have to use it.

Worth connecting

  • PS5 and Xbox Series X or Series S consoles
  • Gaming PCs and home office desktops
  • Smart TVs and streaming boxes
  • Wi-Fi access points, which work far better wired back to the router
  • Network storage and anything else that’s always on

How the job works

First we’ll look at where the router is and where your devices are. Then we’ll plan a route, which could run around a room at skirting level, through a wall, or up through a floor to a bedroom. Nothing gets drilled until you’ve agreed it.

We can finish the cable in a proper wall socket, so you’re not left with a loose lead across the floor. Every connection gets tested before we leave. We’ll also check the device is actually using the cable, because that’s easily missed.

Connecting several rooms

Most routers only have a few network ports. If you’re wiring up several rooms, a network switch next to the router gives you more. It’s also worth thinking ahead. Running a spare cable while we’re already there is much easier than coming back for it later.

An old router’s ports can limit the speed of a wired connection too. We’ll check yours, and we’ll tell you if a router upgrade would help.

Cabling for small businesses

Desks, printers, card terminals and access points all benefit from a fixed connection. We can do network cabling at Telford premises, and we’ll arrange a time that works around your business.

Common questions

Does a wired connection make online gaming better?

It takes Wi-Fi out of the equation, so your latency should be lower and steadier, with fewer sudden spikes. It won't fix a slow broadband line or a game server that's a long way off, but it does remove one of the most common causes of lag at home.

Do the PS5 and Xbox have network ports?

Yes. The PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S all have one on the back. The cable plugs straight in, and the console should pick up the connection in its network settings.

Will the cables be visible?

We keep them as discreet as the building allows, which might mean following the skirting, using neat trunking or going through a wall into the next room. We'll agree the route with you first, and each cable can finish in a proper wall socket.

Tell us where the Wi-Fi stops.

Send us a few details about your building and what's going wrong, and we'll email you back to arrange a survey.
